Public Welfare Foundation supports efforts to advance justice and opportunity for people in need. The Foundation’s current efforts focus on catalyzing a transformative approach to justice that is community-led, restorative, and racially just through investments in criminal justice and youth justice reforms.

The Senior Communications Associate works closely with the Director of Communications on a wide range of Foundation communications issues, including social media campaign development, media relations and media monitoring, web design and content, Board material development, executive positioning support, and messaging creation. The Senior Communications Associate also prepares materials to assist staff and grantees in communicating and positioning their activities with the public to increase the understanding and impact of the work of the Foundation and its grantees. The Communications Associate also works with outside communications consultants who supplement the Foundation staff with specific expertise.


This position description is intended to serve as a summary of the general purpose and essential functions of this position.  It may change as circumstances warrant and may include other duties deemed necessary by management.

  1. Assists the Director of Communications as requested in the development of the media relations and public affairs strategies and outreach plans for Public Welfare Foundation.
  2. Maintains and updates the Foundation’s website. Works closely with Foundation staff to present grant making highlights and amplify the work of Foundation grantees. Develops and monitors the Foundation’s website content to ensure the presence of accurate, timely, and engaging content. Uses creativity and innovation to enhance the website, seeking new, relevant ways to present information about programs and grantee activities. Acts as the liaison with web designer/consultants to achieve desired results with electronic communication. Monitors web site usage to assess how audiences are using the site and how the site can be improved to broaden outreach.
  3. Ensures that print, digital communications, social media, and information released to the media/public are accurate and consistent with the Foundation’s objectives. Stays up to date on and uses social media and other strategies as appropriate to increase the number of people familiar with the Foundation’s work and goals.
  4. Drafts communications materials (e.g., press releases, social media copy, and content for use by Foundation staff).
  5. Develops and implements social media program to share the Foundation’s work, inspire others engaged in criminal and youth justice reform, and disseminate accurate narratives about the criminal justice system and those that it touches.
  6. Tracks current events and media coverage related to grantees and program areas and shares those with the Board of Directors and the Foundation staff as appropriate. Works with public relations firm to ensure all media lists and social media lists up to date.
  7. Assists with project management with consultant teams including, but not limited to, photographers, videographers, and graphic designers.
  8. Supports the Director of Communications in developing responses to crises or challenging situations.
  9. Assists in periodic assessments of the impact of the Foundation’s communications efforts.
  10. Other duties as assigned.


  • Education: Bachelor’s degree required.
  • Work Experience: Three to five years of relevant experience in communications or media, preferably including work with social media or website coordination and content management. Experience with one or more of the Foundation’s program areas is preferred. A commitment to the work of the Foundation is critical.
  • Skills: Proficiency with MS Word, MS Excel, Canva and/or Adobe Creative Suite, and design and content management of a website (WordPress experience preferred), social media tools, excellent written and oral communication skills; interpersonal skills; attention to detail.
  • Capabilities: Solid judgment, critical thinking skills, ability to manage multiple projects at once, and a sense of teamwork and community. Exposure to media outreach at national and policy levels desired.
  • Conditions: Public Welfare Foundation is currently operating on a hybrid schedule, with two days a week spent in our Washington, DC office and three days a week spent working remotely. Some travel may be required.

This position offers a competitive salary range of $90,000 to $97,000 and robust benefits including medical, dental, vision, and retirement. More details can be provided upon request.
