Mary E. McClymont honored as a “Champion of Justice”

The Alliance for Justice paid tribute to the Public Welfare Foundation President & CEO’s lifetime work fighting for human rights and social justice issues.

Public Welfare Foundation President and CEO Mary E. McClymont was recognized today as a “Champion of Justice” by the Alliance for Justice, an association of more than 100 organizations committed to progressive values and the creation of an equitable, just, and free society. The award was presented at AFJ’s annual Justice First! luncheon in Washington, DC.

AFJ President Nan Aron described Ms. McClymont as “a lifelong fighter for social justice and a shining star in the world of philanthropy. Our affection for Mary and our respect for her work deepen with every passing year.” She also noted that the Champion of Justice Award, “recognizes individuals who have dedicated themselves to the cause of equal justice and who have made a real difference in people’s lives.”

During her illustrious career, Ms. McClymont has helped refugees reach the United States, assisted undocumented immigrants secure legal status, litigated cases against poor conditions in U.S. prisons, worked to promote women’s rights and access to justice in Asia, Africa, and Latin America, and advocated for humanitarian relief and development. Earlier, she served as Vice President of Peace and Social Justice at the Ford Foundation. As President and CEO of the Public Welfare Foundation, she oversees work on criminal justice, youth justice, workers’ rights and civil legal aid for the poor.  

“All of us come to this work with passion and purpose—a desire to help others and to make a difference,” said Ms. McClymont. “To be recognized for the work, especially by friends and colleagues of many years, is both heartwarming and humbling.”
